About Aotea Energy

New Zealand has committed to a bold future: a fully electrified and resilient economy powered by renewable energy. Achieving it requires more than generation — it takes flexibility, storage, and intelligence at the edge of the grid.

We build the most affordable and intelligent battery system in NZ, empowering households to control their power and cost. Vertically integrated across hardware, software, retail and installation, we ship fast and move dynamically across the whole business.

The role

You'll have significant ownership over the product, shipping code that goes straight to customers who genuinely care about what we're building. Your playground spans the entire stack: sketch a clean mobile UI, write Rust APIs, and deploy code that physically runs on hardware inside people's homes.

What you can expect

True full-stack
Thrown in the deep end and expected to swim between our mobile app / frontend, our backend, and the code running on the batteries themselves.
No telephone game
You interact directly with users. They're obsessed with energy tech, highly opinionated, and give frequent, unfiltered feedback.
Design & execution
Design and build sleek, intuitive UIs for our mobile app (and soon™ the web) to make sense of complex energy data.
High autonomy
We believe in outputs over everything — a passionate bunch driven by simple, elegant solutions to seemingly impossible problems.

What we've been building lately

Not a maintenance-only role. Here's what the team recently shipped or is scaling.

Wholesale Trading Engine
A continuously refined trading algorithm, predominantly in Rust. It turns real-time electricity prices into high-quality insights and decisions — slashing customer bills by an average of 67%.
High-throughput data pipeline
An IoT ingest pipeline streaming millions of messages a day into hundreds of thousands of rows of real-time grid pricing, weather and battery telemetry.
Fleet orchestration
The core nationwide platform that treats distributed home batteries as a single, coordinated power plant.
The AE App
Our mobile app ships constant updates giving users real-time visibility and control over their hardware, savings and billing.

Why it's a unique place to work

Ambitious as hell
Targeting 50 MWh of distributed storage in three years. Not another generic SaaS wrapper — we're fundamentally changing how the grid and homes move power.
Total ownership
Zero layers of middle management to filter your ideas. You drive the product and see immediate user impact. If you build it, you own it.
No meetings™
Only one company-wide meeting per week. We protect your heads-down time — context switching is an engineer's worst nightmare.
Constant tech evolution
Our stack evolves as architecture scales to massive real-time grid loads. Best tool for the job wins; your skills stretch constantly.

Things to know

For better or worse (we think better), we're a startup — our structure and dynamics differ from larger, older companies.

Because we build critical physical hardware (batteries powering homes) and complex software (sub-second real-time trading and dispatch), we need to be close to the metal and the brains. We're an Auckland-based, in-office-first team.

We aren't clock-watchers — hybrid flexibility keeps you living your life and working at your best. And yes: 50+ kWh of R&D batteries and solar in the office that we have fun playing with.

Bonus points

To succeed you just need to be a first-principled, passionate troubleshooter. Bonus points for experience with:
